Resistant Dogs
We are the "Difficult Dog" experts!
Our goal with every dog is to establish a friendly, respectful, safe, and happy relationship, where nail care is not dreaded, but tolerated and eventually even enjoyed! Many dogs come with prior baggage from forceful, or less-than-patient training methods and experiences. Some dogs have experienced pain or nail strain during a prior experience that leaves a lasting impression. To change their mental-conditioning, some simple concepts apply...

With over 20 years of handling a variety of animals, and hundreds and hundreds of dogs, Deanna has the experience and wisdom to work with your individual dog's needs. Violent, aggressive, fearful dogs of all breeds, from the smallest to largest breeds, can be managed and trained in the SCHP program.

You may or may not be allowed into the trailer for your dog's appointment, based on the assessment at that time. (This is for your dog's best interest, so trust the knowledge and expertise of SCHP and know that your dog is in the best care!)

There is a timeframe for every dog where they are mentally able to receive and process information. This timeframe varies individually, but most commonly, on resistant/difficult/fearful dogs, this allows the nail session to be approximately 20 minutes long. Going past their mental threshold does no good for their acceptance of new learning. If your dog is resistant to the process, we will work patiently to create a new experience that is HEALTHY both physically and mentally, while trimming as many nails as possible--and MOST IMPORTANTLY, ending on a POSITIVE note where the dog is not fighting, or acting-out in any way. That is very important to the training process. If we are unable to get all nails trimmed after 20 minutes of work & training with a difficult dog, the nail trim price is still required to be paid in-full with no discount for untrimmed nails. The nail trim price then covers our training time with your dog.

In some cases, a dog may be settling well and relaxing into the nail care session after 20 minutes, allowing the nail trim to continue successfully. In these cases, depending on the extra time spent to complete the trim, additional charges will be added on for our time:
Additional 10 Minutes: $10
Additional 20 minutes: $20
Additional 30 minutes: $30

Humane, open, (breathable 360-degree “basket” type) muzzles may be used on your dog, as they often have a “calming” affect on resistant dogs, and also allow a safer environment for the technician to work very closely with your dog. These cause the dogs no harm.

Safe, humane “grooming hammocks” may be used on certain dogs. The “hammock” wraps around the dog’s body and is secured above them to the grooming bar. It stabilizes the dog without the need of multiple people holding the dog down, and is therefore less-stressful and less-intimidating.
